As the college continues to grow and new courses designed, we’re always thinking about ways to improve and develop our offer. A new and passionate cohort of teachers this year brings a wealth of expertise and so we have been able to expand our courses in Sixth Form.
Complimenting our range of science courses, Psychology has been added to the list of A Levels and Medical and Forensic Sciences to our BTEC options.
For students intrigued by the way people think and why they behave in certain ways, studying Psychology opens a world of psychological concepts. Exploring the human mind and behaviour, this course delves into topics such as memory, child development and social influence. Throughout the course students get the chance to learn a variety of skills through open discussions surrounding the current issues and debates within the scientific field.
Students who are naturally inquisitive and looking for an exciting and varied platform for a career in science, studying for a BTEC in Applied Science ticks all the right boxes. Combining hands-on practical work with research based reports, students can choose an array of options to suit their passion. Whether they dream of becoming a Forensic Scientist or aspiring Medic, choosing to study one of our Applied Science courses offers students the chance to experience the full breath of scientific disciplines.
As well as Post-16 courses, we also have an array of professional qualifications to study, giving students an advantage over competitors before joining the world of work. We are the only Sixth Form provider in the country offering PRINCE2, a project management course used by many national businesses. Our commitment to making our students ready for employment is strenghtned by our unique additions of ATT and Resilia Cyber Security to the curriculum.
For budding Accountants and students interested in business, our new ATT course is an industry recognised qualification in accounting. The course provides students a solid foundation in finance administration, preparing students for a junior or entry level accounting role. Applying maths into real life experiences, it covers areas such as double entry book-keeping, basic costing principles and how to effectively use industry standard accounting software.
Keeping up with the constant threat of cyber security breaches, Resilia is a relevant new course that provides students an in-depth understanding of cyber risks and methodologies. Learning about one of the biggest challenges that organisations face today, Resilia training goes to the heart of cyber resilience by equipping students with the skills and behaviours to make the right decisions when exposed to cyber risks. Throughout the course, students will discover topics such as phishing and its impact, online safety focusing on social media and safety and information handling.
Developing students’ softer skills is equally important. We are the only college in the local area to place NCS (National Citizen Service) at the heart of the curriculum. Year 12 will work with Warrington Youth Club on a number of team building and engagement sessions before tackling a new adventure on an outdoor residential trip. Their programme will culminate in a social action project, designed to put skills such as communication, initiative and resilience in to practice; students will do this by working as a team to make a positive impact on a local project such as raising money for a veterans charity or making food hampers for vulnerable people in the community.
