Providing our students with a greater insight into the world of industry, we launched our first Business Mentoring Day. We invited our employer partners along to share their knowledge, skills and experience with our students in a bid to help guide them towards positive career choices.
Selected students from each year group met with employers to find out more about each company and the career opportunities available. Students asked mentors about their achievements, their routes into the STEM sector and advice on how to secure a place at a top destination.
Everyone thought the day was a great success, and that our Business Mentoring Days are highly beneficial to both employers and students. Offering employers the chance to meet students and discover emerging talent, whilst giving students an awareness of networking, industry expectations and career planning. We hope that the sessions will also see increased confidence, motivation and productivity throughout the college as students begin to understand the qualities needed to succeed in the workplace.
By the end of the end of the year and after several days spent with employers, we hope that our students will have greater clarity for their careers aspirations and feel encouraged to define their own career path independently.
“Spending time with different mentors was really beneficial. I found out so much more about the nuclear sector in Warrington. Speaking to the Cavendish apprentices, I learnt about their roles and the upcoming opportunity to apply for their apprenticeship programme. Knowing that there are lots of young professionals joining the engineering workforce made me feel more comfortable about going into engineering. It’s really encouraged me to consider applying for one of the Cavendish apprenticeships.”

We would like to thank everyone who joined us from Stanley, Atkins, Science and Technology Facilities Council, Balfour Beatty, Jacobs, Pertemps and Wood, along with our apprentices from Cavendish and Wood. Learning to network within the engineering industry is an invaluable skill.
As we shape the next generation of leaders and innovators, students will take these experiences with them into the workplace. Many of our employer partners collaborate with each other to develop new projects and solve problems. Creating these networks now will begin the foundations of workplace relationships that will benefit them going forward.
